Softball: Yough mounts late-season rally

Playoff prospects were looking bleak for the Yough softball team earlier this season. A heartbreaking 6-5 loss at Thomas Jefferson is how the Cougars opened the season and the very next day there was a demoralizing 11-1 loss at South Park. Through six section games, Yough was 1-5 and sitting in last place in Section 3-AAA all alone and near elimination from postseason contention. But the Cougars did not quit. In a rare transformation rarely seen during the regular season, Yough flipped the script in the second half of the section schedule.

They won 9-5 at Belle Vernon to complete a season sweep of the Leopards and get back on track and improve to 2-5. Four days later they exacted revenge with a 4-1 win against Thomas Jefferson. The very next day came a result that garnered plenty of attention in the WPIAL, a 11-1 win over South Park, the same South Park team that had been on the other end of a 11-1 result earlier in the season. Two days later Yough crawled back to .500 in the section with a 6-4 win at Elizabeth Forward.

Yough is back from the dead and right back in the Section 3-AAA playoff race along with West Mifflin (12-2, 7-2), Southmoreland (8-4, 6-3), Elizabeth Forward (9-5, 6-3) and Thomas Jefferson (9-4, 5-4).

The Cougars will look to extend their winning streak and spring another upset when they host West Mifflin on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Yough closes out its section schedule on May 5 at Southmoreland.
