Westinghouse lost a heartbreaker to Allderdice in the City League semifinals, but still had an opportunity to play itself into the PIAA tournament.

The Bulldogs made the most of their chance.

Westinghouse earned a spot in the PIAA Class 3A playoffs Monday courtesy of a 59-48 win against District 5 champion Everett in the Districts 5-8 subregional championship game. The Bulldogs (13-9) will make their first appearance in the main draw of the PIAA tournament since 2012. They lost in a play-in game the following season.

Westinghouse now takes aim at making some noise in the state playoffs. The Bulldogs will play Riverside (16-8) in a first-round game next Friday. Riverside lost to eventual champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in the WPIAL quarterfinals.

After losing to Allderdice, 43-40, on a last-second 3-pointer, Westinghouse bounced back for the win against Everett. Koran Fleming led the Bulldogs with 20 points and Allen Barr added 12.
