How fast was the field in the 800-meter run at the PIAA Class 3A championships?

Well, consider this: West Allegheny's Maddie Salek ran the fourth-fastest time in WPIAL history ... and finished fifth.

Salek, a junior who won a WPIAL title a week earlier, ran a scorching time of 2:10.72, which would ordinarily win a PIAA title. But not this year. Cardinal O'Hara's Olivia Arizin won her second straight title by posting a time of 2:07.49.

Three WPIAL runners medaled in the event and all three posted one of the fastest times in WPIAL history. Pine-Richland's Amanda Kalin finished fourth with a time of 2:10.09, which is the top mark all-time. Greensburg Salem's Malia Anderson placed sixth with a time of 2:11.28. That was the ninth-fastest mark of all-time.

Salek topped her previous best of 2:12.38, a time she ran to claim the WPIAL title. She finished fourth at the WPIAL championships her sophomore season.
