Girls Basketball: Strong first half boosts West top seed Vincentian

Written by Joe Koch on .

If there was any concern about a post-WPIAL hangover, the WPIAL Class A champion Vincentian Royals put that notion to rest with a dominating first half in a 53-36 victory over Port Allegany, the No. 3 team from District 9, in a PIAA first-round game played this past Saturday at Chartiers Valley High School.

The 23-3 Royals -- the top seed in the Western region -- meet Berlin Brothersvalley, the No. 3 team from District 5, in a second-round game at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hempfield Area High School. Berlin Brothersvalley advanced with a 59-42 victory over District 6-A runner-up Portage and improved to 22-4.

Vincentian took any drama out of the game with Port Allegany by outscoring the Gators 32-11 in the first half. Brenna Wise had a dominating game for Vincentian. She scored 13 of her team-high 19 points in the first half. The 6-0 guard/forward also cleared 14 rebounds and blocked four shots. Teammate Torrieonna Cash added 13 points.

The two teams did not meet in the regular season. The winner of this game meets the winner of a second-round game between Claysburg-Kimmel, the No. 3 team from District 6, and District 10 champion Kennedy Catholic in the quarterfinals.
