Girls Soccer: Upper St. Clair star chooses Dayton

Written by Brad Everett on .

It hasn't taken Landy Mertz much time to establish herself as one of the WPIAL's most dynamic talents.

Chances are coaches at the University of Dayton were thrilled Tuesday when they received a verbal commitment from the Upper St. Clair standout.

Mertz, a rising junior, announced on Twitter that she plans to attend Dayton.

"Incredibly excited and thankful to announce my commitment to play Division I soccer at the University of Dayton!! #flyers #UD" -- landy_mertz

Mertz dazzled last fall when she was the only sophomore named to the Post-Gazette's All-Area Team. Mertz, a 5-foot-5 midfielder, tallied 21 goals and eight assists for Upper St. Clair, which finished 11-6 and reached the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals.

Mertz isn't the only excellent soccer player in her family. Her brother, Robbie, was the Gatorade Pennsylvania Player of the Year his senior season at Upper St. Clair and currently plays at Michigan. Another brother, Ryan, was a Post-Gazette All-Area choice as a senior and will play at Delaware this fall.

Dayton has done a great job of recruiting the WPIAL. Three former local standouts now play for the Flyers: Norwin's Micayla Livingston, Moon's Emma Thomas and Chartiers Valley's Morgan Henderson.
