It must have been a confusing game Saturday afternoon for Sto-Rox basketball players that also played football. As they ran up and down the court, they heard the voice of their coach, Bill Minear, yelling instructions.
But the voice yelling instructions on the Avonworth bench had to sound familiar as well. Avonworth coach Dan Bradley is also the head football coach at Sto-Rox.
The confusion of voices, though, was only a sidelight as the game itself was a crucial one. Sto-Rox had come into the game sitting atop the Section 6-AA standings after a tight 78-75 overtime home win over Quaker Valley. Senior Tony Franzley scored 28 points in that win.
That had been the Vikings’ fourth straight win but the momentum didn’t help as Avonworth slowed the game down and came back from a 24-21 halftime deficit to win. Lenny Williams, the Sto-Rox quarterback who probably knew Bradley’s voice best, led the Vikings with 16 points.
Sto-Rox now trails Avonworth by half a game in the section standings but has a game in hand and could still at least tie for the section title.
