Burrell's Lizzie Weimer is the reigning WPIAL Class 2A champion in the shot put and discus.
Maura Huwalt will try to make sure there are no repeats.
Huwalt, a sophomore at South Park, will face a tall task at Thursday's WPIAL championships when she takes aim at a pair of titles currently held by Weimer, a senior who hopes to win double gold again. Huwalt placed second in the discus and third in the shot put at last year's championships.
Weimer and Huwalt are the No. 1 and 2 seeds in both events. In the shot put, Weimer has a top throw of 43-4 and Huwalt boasts a top throw of 39-6. In the discus, Weimer's top heave is 135-8 and Huwalt's 134-8. Weimer's shot put throw is the best in the WPIAL, regardless of class. Weimer and Huwalt's discus throws are the best in the WPIAL, regardless of class.
Huwalt will also compete in javelin again this year after placing fifth last year. Huwalt is the No. 3 seed with a top throw of 121-11.
