Written by Brad Everett on .

Name: Sam Mastro
School: South Fayette
Grade: 11
Sport: Track & Field
Events: Discus, shot put

Background: Mastro is one of the top throwers in the WPIAL. He claimed titles in both events at the Mt. Lebanon Invitational and Tri-State Track Coaches Association championships. His throw of 179 feet, 2 inches in the discus at the TSTCA championships topped the next-closest competitor by more than 40 feet. His two titles helped South Fayette win the team championship. He had a top shot put throw of 52-8 at the Mt. Lebanon Invitational. At last year's WPIAL Class 3A championships, Mastro finished fifth in the discus and seventh in the shot put. His discus throw of 163-4 qualified him for the PIAA championships for the first time.

Coach Scott Litwinovich said: "Well, you know, in indoor season he went 54 in the shot. He went 54 again in the USC relays. He only hit 51 [at the TSTCA championships], but I know he's focusing on the discus. He's a kid that puts his time in. He comes to practice and works out. He's very dedicated in the weight room. He's doing it the right way. He's getting a lot of interest from a lot of really nice schools. I don't know if he can go anywhere he wants to, but he's certainly going to have his pick. He's a good leader. I really just can't say enough about him."
