After a torrid start to their 2012 campaign, South Allegheny wound up stumbling into a playoff berth for the first time in coach Dean Vickers' seven-year tenure. After a 7-0 start, which included handing Greensburg Central Catholic its first section loss in seven years, the Gladiators hit a wall. They won only two of their final 10 regular season games, and fell to Bishop Canevin in the first round of the playoffs.
Once again, South Allegheny is off to a hot start this season. But this time around, Vickers is convinced the second-half of their campaign will tell a much different story. On Saturday, his squad battled to a 0-0 draw with Serra Catholic, improving the Gladiators' record to 5-1-1, 2-1-1 overall.
Vickers believes the result against a team of Serra's caliber shows that this years South Allegheny squad is for real.
"Last year, after we started out 7-0, we just ran into some problems," he said. "This year, the kids are all focused. ... They feel confident and they're a cole-knit group. They're playing together very well as a team."
