Shady Side Academy grad signs minor league baseball contract

Recent Columbia University graduate Tim Giel Jr. has been signed as a free agent pitcher by the New York Yankees. Giel, a Gibsonia resident and Shady Side Academy graduate, was a four-year starter at Columbia.

Giel’s Columbia career culminated this year with his most impressive season. The right-hander threw 64.2 innings, posting a 3.20 ERA and 3-3 record. He also record 51 strikeouts, his highest total in a single season. Three times in 2013 Giel went the distance, while also registering a pair of shutouts against Ivy League foes Brown and Penn.

Over the course of his four years with the Lions, Giel posted a 10-9 record and a 4.03 ERA in 190 innings of work. During the 2011 season, Giel came on and saved five games, setting the program record in the category.
