Golf: Sewickley Academy hopes to defend WPIAL, PIAA team titles

Written by Joe Koch on .

One year after winning both the WPIAL and PIAA 2A team titles, the Sewickley Academy boys golf team hopes to earn yet another sweep at this year's team championships.

To do that, though, the Panthers must stave off the challenge of 17 other teams beginning Monday with two semifinal tournaments taking place.

Sewickley will be one of nine teams competing for team honors at De Mar Golf Course. The rest of the field features teams from Beaver, Burrell, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, Deer Lakes, Laurel, Riverside, Seton-LaSalle and South Side Beaver.

While that's taking place, nine more teams will gather at Linden Hall Golf Course. They are from California, Carmichaels, Derry, Freeport, McGuffey, Quaker Valley, South Park, Southmoreland and Steel Valley.

Girls Tennis: Sewickley Academy in unfamiliar territory

Written by Keith Barnes on .

Sewickley Academy has not been in this position in a long time.

On Tuesday, the Panthers were stunned in a 3-2 loss to Neshannock in the WPIAL Class 2A semifinals. Now, in order to qualify for the state team tournament, they have to defeat Indiana in the third-place consolation match at 2 p.m. today at North Allegheny.

Sewickley Academy has played in the WPIAL championship match each of the last eight years and has won four titles in that span. The last time the Panthers were absent from the state tournament was in 2007 when Quaker Valley, Beaver and Greensburg Central Catholic filled the three spots.

Golf: Sewickley Academy's Li edged out for WPIAL 2A boys title

Written by Joe Koch on .

It wasn't the result he had hoped for. But Sewickley Academy senior Jason Li will have plenty of incentive when he tees it up for the WPIAL Class 2A team championship and at the PIAA Western Regional championship later this month.

Li ran into a hot contender at Thursday's WPIAL Class 2A championship at Allegheny Country Club when Riverside freshman Skyler Fox defeated him by one stroke with a round of 72.

Li finished in a second-place tie with South Park junior Tyler Brinker with a round of 73.

Li's rival from Quaker Valley, Chris Tanabe, was next with a 74. Li's teammate, Will Nocito and Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic's Tre Bartony also advanced with rounds of 77. Another Sewickley golfer, Ryan Gex, displayed the Panthers' depth as he qualified for the regional tournament with a round of 79.
