Boys Tennis: Sewickley Academy begins PIAA title defense

Written by Keith Barnes on .

It wasn't surprising that Sewickley Academy finished its PIAA Class 2A team tennis preliminary round match in fast fashion.

Not only are the Panthers the defending state champions, they were playing District 5 champion Bedford, which is an area not know for putting out tennis powerhouses.

Things might get a little more challenging on Friday, however, when Sewickley Academy begins its title defense in earnest when it takes on District 11 champion Moravian Academy at 12:30 p.m. at Hershey Racquet Club. The two teams met last year when the Panthers knocked off the 2015 state champions, 4-1, behind wins by all three of the team's singles players, Luke Ross, Sam Sauter and Ryan Gex.

All three players are also back this year.

So, too, is District 3 champion Wyomissing, the 2016 runner-up and there is the potential for a state finals rematch. Sewickley Academy won the title, 5-0, in the finals.

No WPIAL team in either classification has ever repeated as state champion.
