Serra Catholic girls' basketball team locks down section title

Serra Catholic coach Bill Cleary said earlier in the season that winning the Class A Section 4 title was a priority for his team.

That said, Cleary and his players had to have been happy with reaching that goal last Thursday.

Serra Catholic’s win at Clairton combined with Winchester Thurston’s loss at Monessen that same night gave the Eagles (16-2, 8-0) the outright section title.

It’s Serra Catholic’s first section title since the 2008-09 season. The Eagles finished in second place the past three seasons.

Ranked No. 2 in Class A, Serra Catholic’s only losses were to No. 1 Vincentian and Class AAA Belle Vernon. In their wins, the Eagles have beaten all but one of their opponents by at least 13 points. They’ve won their last three games by scores of 82-15, 48-13 and 60-24. The Eagles average a Class A-best 69.4 points per game.
