Girls' Basketball: West Feature Athlete - Riverside's Nicole Mansfield

Written by Sports Town on .

Name: Nicole Mansfield
High School: Riverside
Grade: 12
Sport: Basketball

Background info: A four-year letterwinner, Nicole has been called upon to take upon a bigger role as a senior leader and scorer. Last year, Samantha Weir carried the scoring load for the Panthers, who won the section, but she graduated and Mansfield has stepped up her game. Averaging about 15 points and 10 rebounds per game, Mansfield has answered the challenge and has the Panthers in the midst of the playoff hunt again. Also a standout as a catcher for the Riverside softball team, Mansfield has not yet decided which sport she will pursue next year or if she’ll concentrate on academics instead.

Quotes from Coach John Wolf: “Nicole has become our main inside presence this season with Sam’s graduation. She has picked up the slack and really stepped into the leadership role. Nicole has always been a big contributor - she’s lettered since her freshman year - but someone had to make up for Sam’s points. We challenged her to get a double-double and that’s basically what she is averaging. She’s developed a jump shot, too, and we’ve put her on the wing at times. We’re playing a lot of freshmen this year and Nicole’s leadership has been important, too.”
