Swimming: North Feature Athlete - Quaker Valley’s Harry Harkins

Written by Nicholas Tolomeo on .

Name: Harry Harkins
School: Quaker Valley
Grade: 12
Sport: Swimming

Background: Owen Harkins is one of the biggest returning names at the MAC championships that will be held this weekend at Moon. Harkins was a catalyst for the Quakers last year as they captured the MAC team title. He will have to play an even bigger role this year as Quaker Valley looks to plug a number of holes in its relays.

The Quakers rode to the MAC team title on the back of strong freestyle relays that featured Matthew Kwalick, Evan Ragoowansi, Kyle Hrabovsky and Harkins. Only Harkins is back this year from those two winning relays. Individually, Harkins won the 200 freestyle at MACs and took second place in the 100 freestyle last season.

This season, Harkins will enter as the top seed in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.13, ahead of Mars sophomore Andrew Pierre (1:50.37). He is also the third seed in the 100 freestyle with a seed time of 49.63 on the psych sheet, behind New Castle sophomore Zachary Bell (48.68) and Carlynton senior Luke Ulizzi (49.07). Quaker Valley's 200 and 400 freestyle relays are seeded second and fourth respectively.

The MAC diving championships will be held today at 4 p.m., and swimming will begin Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
