Entering the final week of the regular-season play in high school baseball, only South Park (Class AAA) and Quaker Valley (Class AA) remained undefeated.
The playoff-bound Quakers (16-0, 13-0) entered this week ranked No. 2 in Class AA by the Post-Gazette and have posted five shutout victories in 15 games. Quaker Valley also has allowed just nine runs in its past seven games.
“There’s not a whole lot you can say about a 16-0 team,” Quaker Valley coach Todd Goble said. “The guys are doing what’s needed to be done to win games. They’re all playing hard and everyone is contributing.”
The Quakers captured the Section 1-AA title following an 8-4 nine-inning win against New Brighton on May 2. Junior pitcher/catcher Ben Utterback scored on an error in the ninth to seal the victory over the Lions. Senior outfielder Clayton Bouchard supplied four hits in the game.
Senior pitcher Jake Pilewicz has been one of the Quakers’ top pitchers this season. He turned in one of his best performances against Carlynton earlier in the year by striking out 11 during a one-hit, 5-0, shutout.
Quaker Valley is scheduled to finish its regular season this week against Seton-La Salle and Ambridge.
