Golf: Pine-Richland's Freyvogel qualifies for Symetra Tour event

Written by Keith Barnes on .

Keith Barnes profiles Pine-Richland golfer Lauren Freyvogel.

"Lauren Freyvogel has golfed in tournaments throughout the winter and it paid off in a way she never expected.

On April 1, the Pine-Richland sophomore shot a 2-under 70 in the first round of the Women's Health Classic Junior Challenge at The Links at Stoney Point in Greenwood, S.C., and put up a 77 in the second round for a final total of 3-over 147 to win the event by four strokes over Kathryn Carson of Mooresville, N.C.

With the victory, Freyvogel earned a spot in the LPGA Symetra Tour Women's Health Classic May 11-14 at the same course. Only the winner of the junior event received a sponsorship exemption to participate in the Symetra Tour, which is one of the few developmental tours for the LPGA available in women's golf.

"It was a great tournament and I'd just like to thank them for giving us this amazing opportunity," Freyvogel said. "I'm super excited and I'm not really sure what to expect, but I just have to play my game and be the best that I can, stay in the moment and enjoy every single thing I can that week.""

Boys Tennis: Pine-Richland hitting its stride

Written by Keith Barnes on .

A couple of weeks ago Pine-Richland appeared that it would have a problem qualifying for the WPIAL Class 3A team playoffs.

Now the Rams are surging and could be a dark horse to win it all.

Pine-Richland has a solid lineup led by senior singles player Ben Vinarski and has played some of the best teams in the WPIAL with North Allegheny and Sewickley Academy on its slate. Still, the Rams have lost three matches and are beatable despite their recent surge.

Written by Keith Barnes on .

Name: Thomas Zbezinski
School: Pine-Richland
Class: 12
Sport: Baseball
Position: Pitcher

Background: Is probably the best pitcher in the WPIAL that no one has heard of and that's because he's on the same staff with Virginia Tech recruit Ryan Okuda. Was also the No. 2 starter for the Rams last year and had several key victories in that role. Pitched Monday against Central Catholic and got a no-decision after he allowed one run on three hits and struck out four in 6 1/3 innings.

Lacrosse: Pine-Richland faces two solid opponents this week

Written by Joe Koch on .

The girls lacrosse season moves into high gear this week with some competitive games.

Right in the middle of the action is Pine-Richland.

Coach Brittany Adams' team faces two solid foes when the Rams host Seneca Valley on Monday and visit North Hills on Wednesday.

The 4-0 Rams earned crucial victories over section rivals Butler, 15-3, and Sewickey Academy, 15-7, this past week. The Rams then stepped out of section this past Friday with a visit to Peters Township. Seneca Valley fell to non-section rival Fox Chapel, 13-7, in its opener, and then opened section play with a 15-11 victory over Sewickley Academy. The Raiders defeated host North Hills, 13-7, this past Monday. Each team faces a section opponent twice during the regular season, so every game is important.
