“Well, it was a crazy game,” head coach Cliff Foster said when asked about the 49-45 loss the Rams had with Shaler on Monday, January 14. “We came out and started very poorly.”
Shaler outscored Pine-Richland 19-6 in the first quarter. The Titans also outscored Pine-Richland in the second quarter, 15-9. At the half, Pine-Richland made the decision to change the game.
“In the second half, we played out of our minds defensively,” recalled Foster. “We were trapping - all kinds of crazy schemes – and we got it within three points with 15 seconds to go.”
The game came down to a three-point shot, and Pine-Richland missed it. Then, in the quest for the rebound, Pine-Richland got called for a loose ball push.
Shaler took and made the two critical foul shots, winning the game 49-45.
“Both teams played super hard, said Foster. “If the game went one more minute, we would have won.”
For Pine-Richland, Marisa Hombosky shot for 12 points and Maria Battaglia had 10. The Titans’ Courtney Bauer scored 13 points and Andi Lydon added 11 for Shaler.
“Shaler – they are young and really quick,” said Foster. “They play a lot of girls who can handle the ball. We played guards at big girls’ positions just to create some chaos. We play nine or 10 girls almost every night.”
Pine-Richland had a section contest against North Hills last week and also a nonsection game with mars. Game results and current records can be found on the WPIAL 2012-13 girls’ basketball page at Post-Gazette NOW.
Pine-Richland plays tonight, hosting Seneca Valley.
