Peters Township softball team comes on strong

Written by Nick Tolomeo on .

After a rather remarkable 8-0 start, Peters Township went through a midseason lull, going 4-3 over a stretch of games.

The Indians were playing over .500 ball during the stretch but with losses to Mt. Lebanon, Canon-McMillan and Baldwin, if Peters Township was going to clinch a playoff spot they would have likely been described as backing into the playoffs.

But lately the Indians have caught fire and now they look as if they are picking up steam on the way to the postseason.

Peters Township defeated Bethel Park 13-4, Mt. Lebanon 6-0 and Chartiers Valley 9-3 last week to clinch a playoff berth and improve its overall record to 15-3 and its Class AAAA Section 4 record to 9-3. The Indians need one more win to clinch second place in the section where they sit behind Canon-McMillan (11-0) and ahead of Baldwin (7-4) and Bethel Park (7-5).

In the win over Chartiers Valley, sophomore pitcher Carly Konopka got the win, striking out six. Five different players hit doubles in that game, senior third baseman Hannah Berardino, senior infielder Abby Cunningham, sophomore infielder Molly Campbell, junior second baseman Tori Weida and sophomore outfielder Viktoria Heiser who had two. Berardino, Weida, Heiser and sophomore outfielder Meghan Bastyr each had two RBIs.

In the win over Mt. Lebanon it was sophomore pitcher Kellyn Perich earning the win with a seven strikeout performance. Cunningham, Perich and Bastyr each had a double in the game with Cunningham driving in two runs.
