There are two seniors on the Penn Hills girls’ basketball roster: guard Gloria Schifino and forward Ryan Glaze. The rest of the Indians, though young, are playing at a high level to send their seniors out on a high note.
Take last Monday’s (January 28) win over Franklin Regional.
“We got off to a fast start,” recalled head coach John Tate. “Gloria Schifino and Jade Ely, two starting guards, came out and played really well the first quarter.”
After that quarter, Penn Hills led Franklin Regional by a score of 20 to 3.
Tate felt that his team did not play as well in the third quarter of the game – Franklin actually narrowed the gap to 6 points for a 38-32 score at the end of three. But both the Indians and Panthers scored 17 points in the fourth, meaning Penn Hills would keep its six point lead.
“Down the stretch we played well,” said Tate. “We defended well early and rebounded well early, which created a cushion for us. Franklin Regional made a run like we figured they would, but we were able to hold them.”
For Penn Hills, Schifino scored 20 points and Ely added 16.
Penn Hills played out last week at Fox Chapel (61-48, Fox Chapel) and at home hosting Plum. All game results as well as current records can be found on the WPIAL 2012-13 girls’ basketball page at Post-Gazette NOW.
The Indians next game is tomorrow night at McKeesport.
