Girls Basketball: Obama undefeated City League champs for third year in a row

Obama Academy won the City League regular-season title without dropping a league game.

In other words, it's been business as usual for the Eagles this season.

For the third season in a row, Obama finished as undefeated City League regular-season champs. In their final league game Friday, the Eagles beat Carrick, 72-35, to improve to 10-0. They also finished 10-0 the previous two seasons.

Obama was barely tested against league opponents this season. Allderdice lost to Obama by eight points the second time those teams played, but the Eagles won all of their other games by double digits.

"Darelle Porter proved recently that he is masterful at keeping a secret.

Fully aware that daughter Michaela was on the precipice of scoring her 1,000th career point for Obama Academy, the former Perry Traditional Academy and Pitt basketball star went into hush-mode on Dec. 15.

"Thought I would surprise her," said Porter, a volunteer-assistant with the Eagles.

He did."

The reigning City League player of the year might lead her team to a four-peat this season. Obama is 8-5 overall and in first place in the City League with a 4-0 record. Porter, a 5-foot-11 guard-forward, has been her usual excellent self, leading the Eagles with 15 points and 10 rebounds per game. She will play next season at the University of Cincinnati.
