Baseball: Pope blesses Obama with a win

Written by Brad Everett on .

Obama Academy prayed it would pick up its first win of the season Wednesday.

It only made sense the Eagles would turn to a Pope to make it happen.

Horace Pope went 3 for 3 with five RBIs to lead Obama to a 14-1, four-inning win against Westinghouse.

Pope, a senior and team captain, doubled twice, hit a home run, and scored three runs.

Senior Sean McGrath was the winning pitcher, allowing just two hits while striking out eight.

Obama's victory vaulted the Eagles (1-3 overall) to 1-0 in City League play. Westinghouse and Perry are the only two other teams in the league this season.

In addition to Pope and McGrath, the other seniors on the team are Abner Roberts, Duane Gudenburr and Mike Noftz.

The junior class consists of Ben Retcofsky, Cameron Miller, Emmanuel Walker, Joel Akrie, Remere Dyer and Will Taylor.

The sophomores are Jacob Beckman, John Carl Council, Josh Fitch, Langston Brentley, Owen Baillie and Sam Okabayashi.

The freshman class includes Ethan Reed and Hezekiah Johnson.
