Oakland Catholic swimmer Smith distancing herself from pack

Written by Nick Tolomeo on .

After taking a year off from high school swimming to pursue her Olympic dream, Oakland Catholic’s Leah Smith had no chance to defend her WPIAL titles in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle.

Now back as a senior it seems that no one in the WPIAL, or the state for that matter, has a chance against Smith.

Smith is beginning to post faster and faster times, times that were the reason she qualified for the US Olympic Trials in June 2012.

Smith swam the 200 freestyle in 1:49.10 this season. The next fastest reported time in WPIAL Class AAA belongs to North Allegheny’s Jade Song who has recorded a 1:54.04. The gap is even wider in the 500 freestyle where Smith has swam a 4:45.49 ahead of Pine-Richland’s Kristen Murslack (5:05.41).
