Norwin's girls lacrosse team has made a solid accounting of itself five games into the season heading into this past Wednesday's game with regional rival Latrobe.
All but one of the Knights' foes this season are Class 3A schools, and they slipped to 3-2 with a 21-6 loss to Fox Chapel on April 7. The 8-0 Foxes are one of the most solid girls teams in the WPIAL this season.
Norwin began the season with Class 3A Section 2 victories over Hempfield, 14-11, and Freeport, 21-8. Following a 16-6 section loss to Shady Side Academy, Norwin rebounded with a thrilling 14-13 overtime victory over Indiana before the loss to Fox Chapel.
Schools in Class 3A Section 2 play each opponent twice during the regular season. Norwin closes the season on the road with Penn-Trafford, a team the Knights meet on Monday.
A season ago, Norwin won its first WPIAL championship in 56 years.
The Knights hope the wait for their next one is much shorter.
Last year's Class 4A champion is now in 6A after the number of classifications increased from four to six this season. It's been a case of new class, similar results. Norwin is ranked No. 5 in its class by the Post-Gazette and took a 2-0 record into Monday's game at Central Catholic.
Norwin began the season with a 6-5 win against Allderdice. Senior Ryan Weaver, senior Matt Lamanti and junior Nick Zona had two RBIs apiece. One day later, the Knights won at Indiana, 8-2. Weaver was the winning pitcher. Lamanti had two hits and three RBIs.
Carli Polczynski won the javelin at last weekend’s Carnegie Mellon Mini Invitational with a throw of 117 feet, 7 inches (35.83m).
The mark is currently second among PAC counterparts and ranks 35th in the Division III performance list this season.
The Norwin graduate was named PAC Rookie of the Week.

The Saint Vincent track teams made their annual visit to California, Pennsylvania for the Cal U Early Bird Invitational.
Brandan Moretton, a Norwin graduate, finished third in the 800, with a time of 1:57.04.
