Norwin finished just third in its section last season, yet went on to win a WPIAL title.
The Knights now have the section title that alluded them last spring. They hope a repeat WPIAL title will come next.
Norwin needed to win Monday to earn at least a share of the Class 6A Section 2 title. As it turned out, the Knights not only got the win, they got the outright title, as well. Norwin and Hempfield opened the day tied for first place with 7-2 records. Norwin won. Hempfield did not.
It was a celebratory afternoon for Norwin, which beat visiting Penn Hills, 4-2. The Knights improved to 13-3 overall. Hempfield's day did not go as smoothly as the Spartans lost at Connellsville, 6-5. The loss dropped Hempfield to 12-8 overall.
Connellsville clinched a playoff berth with its win. Norwin (8-2), Hempfield (7-3), Plum (7-3), Penn-Trafford (4-6) and Connellsville (4-6) all qualified for the playoffs from the section. The other team, Penn Hills, is 0-15.
