Football: North Allegheny's Devine picks Virginia

Written by Brad Everett on .

The summer is a popular time for high school football players to make their college choices, and several players from the WPIAL have made their decisions in the last week.

The latest comes from a North Allegheny offensive lineman.

Derek Devine is a rising senior and a big kid -- he's 6-foot-6, 280 pounds -- so he's literally a big get for his future school. That school will be the University of Virginia. Devine chose the Cavaliers over offers from Bowling Green, Buffalo and Eastern Kentucky.

Devine announced his decision on Twitter.

"I am proud to announce that I am 100% committed to the University of Virginia!! #hoosrising18" -- devine2304

Devine was a starter last season for a North Allegheny team that went 9-3 and reached the WPIAL Class 6A semifinals. He helped create running holes and pass protect for an offense that averaged 34.9 points per game.

Football isn't the only sport in which Devine excels. Also a standout wrestler, Devine reached the WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinals in the 285-pound weight class his junior season.
