"When he was a toddler, Trent Vietmeier's neighbor got him a plastic toy spider as a present.
Vietmeier would throw the spider back and forth with his dad, Glenn, with more force than you'd expect from the average preschooler — until the toy reached an early retirement.
"By the time he was 5, that little rubber spider ... the legs were broken off, there was hardly [anything] left of it," Glenn said.
Glenn tried not to get ahead of himself, but it was one of the many early signs pointing his son toward baseball. That, and all the times a 2-year-old Vietmeier could make contact with a whiffle ball."
