Monessen girls' basketball team wins first game

The Monessen girls’ basketball team has had some excellent seasons over the years, but this has not been one of them.

The Greyhounds earned their first win of the season last Thursday when they defeated host Winchester Thurston, 48-27. Mariah Ward led the Greyhounds with 25 points.

After beating Westinghouse in the Gateway tournament Saturday, the Greyhounds are 2-8 (1-2 in Class A Section 4).

Prior to this season, Monessen had made 23 consecutive trips to the WPIAL playoffs. They will need a strong finish in section play to keep that streak alive.

The Greyhounds are led by Ward – a 5-foot-7 senior guard – and 5-8 senior forward Chelsea Szakal.
