Ask Sammie Weiss, and she’ll likely tell you that helping her team earn a section title has been her biggest accomplishment this season.
Individually, Weiss has something to be proud about, too.
Weiss finished the regular season as the top scorer in the South area and No. 3 overall among WPIAL and City League players by scoring 27.5 points per game. Weiss trailed only Jeannette’s Ciara Gregory and Hopewell’s Shatori Walker-Kimbrough.
Weiss, a 5-10 sophomore guard, has led McGuffey to a huge turnaround after going 11-11 last season in Class AAA. This season, the Highlanders moved down to Class AA and have had one of the best seasons in school history. The Highlanders are 19-2 overall and went 12-0 in Section 5.
Weiss averaged a team-high 19 points per game as a freshman and earned all-section honors.
McGuffey is the No. 6 seed in the WPIAL playoffs and will play a first-round game Tuesday against the Riverside (15-8) at Keystone Oaks.
