Mars played some Quad-A basketball to help prep for playoffs

Over the past two weeks, Section 1-AAA Mars took a field trip through Section 3-AAAA. Thee Planets had some good times.

On Saturday (January 19), the Planets played Pine-Richland and got a 52-43 win. Sara Getsy scored 19 points for Mars, and her teammate Ali Goetz scored 16.

“I thought we were starting to get in a good groove, doing better with our substitution patterns,” said head coach Tony Howard. He explained that the Planets have gotten especially good at fulfilling their basketball roles.

“We played fast in that game,” Howard said about the Saturday at Pine-Richland. “It was the type of game where we were up and down the court. We really excel at being aggressive in the attack.

Howard noted that he thought Pine-Richland had some good height, but that Mars had played its own game for success. He said the Planets passed the ball intelligently and effectively. He also said they went to the foul line more than 30 times.

As to the quad-A games in the middle of the January section schedule, Howard explained that they were part of a balance. Mars didn’t want to get any players injured at this point in the season, but they wanted to keep things ambitious. The Planets wanted to play some unfamiliar teams from other classifications as a means of prepping for the upheaval of playoffs.

Likewise, Mars played North Hills on Wednesday (January 23). All game results as well as current records and standings can be found on the WPIAL 2012-13 girls’ basketball page at Post-Gazette NOW.

“We want to get up to playoff speed and play some physical basketball,” said Howard. “It will get us ready for playoffs.” Howard added that the Planets are seeing a lot of tough, zone defenses. They want to be ready to break those.

Mars plays next tonight at Kittanning.
