Mars hoopers got physical to defeat veteran Mohawk as 2013 began

The Planets’ went back to school last Wednesday like everyone else, but they didn’t wait a day to get back to the basketball. With one senior out sick, Mars faced a Mohawk team with five returning starters from a 2011-12 squad that won 18 games.

Nonetheless, Mars prevailed and won 38-35. Sophomore guard Sara Getsy shot for 15 points for the Planets, and Daniella Paras added 10.

“We did fall behind in the fourth quarter, but we just kept grinding through it,” said head coach Tony Howard. “We just kept running our offense that we’ve ran all year, and we were able to get a couple scores at the end.”

Howard added that much of the Mars team’s game preparation comes from the help of a versatile JV squad. The JV team mimics real opponents tendencies to set up game scenarios for the varsity team.

“The younger girls are asked to do a lot,” said Howard. “They probably practice other teams’ offenses more than they do their own.”

Mars played Kittanning (in Section 1-AAA) on Thursday. Game results, current records and standings can be found on the 2012-13 girls’ varsity basketball page at Post-Gazette NOW .

Mars’ next game is tonight at Hampton.
