Lacrosse: Latrobe seizes first place in section

Written by Joe Koch on .

The girls lacrosse teams from Latrobe and Hempfield had both started off the season quite well, and there was a sense that this past Tuesday's game between the two teams would be a big game.

And, it was. With first place on the line in Division 2, Section 1, the winner would be in control of the section lead and have the inside track for a berth in the WPIAL Division 2 girls tournament.

Latrobe, which had won five of its first six games was the better team on this date as the Wildcats secured a 10-5 triumph over the Spartans.

The loss was the first year for the 4-1 Spartans. Their four wins had come against section opponents.

Baseball: Strong junior class has Latrobe poised for a big season

Written by Brad Everett on .

Whoever said 13 is an unlucky number certainly didn't have the Latrobe baseball team in mind.

Guided by a coach in his 13th season and a talented group of 13 juniors, the Wildcats appear to be one of the better teams in Class AAAA. The Wildcats are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in Section 2.

Veteran coach Matt Basciano has 17 players on his roster, 13 of whom are juniors. Among them are Jared Kollar and Zach Kokoska, who were both all-section honorees last season. Kollar made it as a pitcher and Kokoska as an outfielder. Kokoska also pitches. He's a Virginia Tech recruit.

Among the other top juniors are Ryan Augustine, Mason Petrosky, Tyler Roble and Ryan Shawley.
