Basketball: Former Kiski Area player a step away from coaching in NBA

Written by Mike White on .

Mike White profiles Kiski Area graduate Nevada Smith, who is the head coach of the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA D-League.

"Only four seasons ago, Nevada Smith was coaching basketball at an NCAA Division III college. Now he has taken another step to possibly coaching in the NBA.

Smith is the new head coach of the Miami Heat's team in the D-League, the minor league for the NBA. Smith will take over the Sioux Falls Skyforce in South Dakota.

Sioux Falls is a long way from Vandergrift, Pa., where Smith played at Kiski Area High School. But the Skyforce might put Smith closer to the NBA.

This is another chapter in an interesting coaching ride that has quickly taken Smith from a small-college coach to the doorstep of the NBA. Four current NBA head coaches are former D-League head coaches — Luke Walton (Los Angeles Lakers), Earl Watson (Phoenix Suns), Quin Snyder (Utah Jazz) and Dave Joerger (Sacramento Kings). Other former D-League head coaches are NBA assistants."

Football: Kiski Area using Greece to slide past opponents

Written by Brad Everett on .

Kiski Area is off to its best start in quite some time.

Ross Greece is a big reason why.

Greece, a junior running back, is the second-leading rusher in Class 5A and is also second in the class in touchdowns. His ability to pile up chunks of yardage and find the end zone often has vaulted No. 5 Kiski Area to the top spot in the Big East Conference. The Cavaliers are 4-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Penn-Trafford (5-0, 3-0) is the only other team without a conference loss. It's a tremendous start for a Cavaliers team that hasn't finished with a winning record since 2003.

For the season, Greece has rushed for 697 yards and 13 touchdowns. Only Armstrong star Zane Dudek has put up better numbers. Greece rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns in last week's 43-14 win against Connellsville. He had first-quarter touchdown runs of 46 and 50 yards. A week earlier, he ran for a career-high 220 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-28 triumph at Latrobe.
