Wrestling: Kiski Area wins 2016 Eastern Area Invitational

Kiski Area ran away with the team title at the Eastern Area Invitational, held Dec. 9-10 at Gateway High School. The Cavaliers had eight wrestlers in the finals and claimed four individual titles.

Cam Connor, Joe Blumer, Tom Starr, and Isaac Reid won titles for Kiski. Connor beat North Allegheny's Zach Stedeford, 3-0, in the 138-pound final. Blumer won at 145 with an 8-4 win over West Allegheny's Ty McGeary. Starr pinned Altoona's Nate Simmers in the 220-pound final. Reid won at 285 with by pinning West Mifflin's Gerald Brown.

Kiski Area outscored North Allegheny, 298 to 216.5. Placing second for the Cavaliers were: Darren Miller, at 113; Noah Levitt, at 126; Nick Delp, at 152; and Brad Nagy, at 170.


Hockey: East Feature Athlete - Kiski Area's Austin LaPiana

Background: LaPiana is playing in the PIHL for the first time, but he is already making an indelible mark. LaPiana is leading Class 1A with 20 goals and 27 points in just eight games. He has scored at least one point in every game this season and was held without a goal only once, in a 5-3 win over Greensburg Salem on Oct. 10. He came back with a vengeance in the next game he played against the Golden Lions with eight goals and 10 points in a 15-2 win on Nov. 7. He also had hat tricks against Freeport and Westmont Hilltop.


Alumni Update - DeShawon Bracy (Thiel)

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats held off a late fourth quarter comeback by the Grove City WolverinesBracy Thiel Saturday to win the Mercer County Cup for the third consecutive year, 47-41.

Freshman receiver DeShawon Bracy, a Kiski Area graduate, caught eight passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns.

It was Bracy's second 200+ yard receiving performance of the year.

Bracy’s performance earned him PAC Rookie of the Week honors.

Alumni Update - Rachel Frye (Penn State - Behrend)

ERIE, Pa. – Penn State Behrend junior outside hitter Rachel Frye and junior setter Hannah Saunders have beenFrye PSUB named to the 2016 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) women's volleyball team.

Frye, Kiski Area graduate, earned her first All-Conference honor on the first team, while Saunders was named to the second team after earning third-team accolades a year ago.

Frye led the team and ranked fourth in the AMCC in kills (300) and was fifth in the conference in kills per set (2.78). She tallied double-digit kills in 12 matches, including a season-high 21 against D'Youville. Frye also added 96 digs, 27 blocks and 14 aces this season.
