Woodland Hills football team winning with defense
When Woodland Hills gets defensive, don’t take it personally.
The No. 7 seed Wolverines (9-2) have rallied around an excellent defense to gain a spot in the WPIAL Class AAAA semifinals, where they will play No. 3 Upper St. Clair (10-1) at Baldwin on Friday.
Since losing to Mt. Lebanon, 39-36, in overtime on Sept. 28, Woodland Hills has won all six of its games, allowing an average of less than 10 points per contest in that period. The Wolverines have surrendered only 21 points in the postseason, this after beating North Hills, 27-7, and then No. 2 Gateway, 17-14, in last Friday’s quarterfinals. In that game, the Wolverines forced two turnovers and held the Gators to minus-25 yards rushing.
As for Woodland Hills’ next opponent, Upper St. Clair, the Panthers are scoring 35.2 points per game and have outscored their two playoff opponents – Kiski Area and Central Catholic – by a combined 87-0.
