Winchester Thurston boys tennis team advances to semifinals

Winchester Thurston made it 2-for-2 when it comes to WPIAL boys tennis semifinal appearances.

In only the second season of the program's existence, the Bears made it to the WPIAL Class AA team semifinals for the second consecutive season with a 5-0 victory against Bishop Canevin Wednesday afternoon at the Western Area YMCA.

"We are so excited about the success we've achieved, and the potential we've yet to reach," said first singles player Gabe Isaacson, a senior.

Other winners against the Crusaders were junior Tym Hoban at second singles, junior Alex Kietz at third singles,  sophomore Charlie Orr and senior Sammy Pollack at first doubles and freshmen Peter Hoban and Max Pollack at second doubles.

Winchester Thurston will play Section 3-AA rival Hampton in the semifinals 3 p.m. today at Pine-Richland. The Talbots won each of the first two meetings by scores of 3-2 and 4-1.

The winner advances to Friday's championship match; the loser will play in the consolation match to determine the WPIAL's third PIAA tournament qualifier.

In the Class AAA tournament, Central Catholic lost a 3-2 heartbreaker at North Allegheny in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

The Vikings' top two players -- Adam Blasinsky at first singles and Ross Molinaro at second singles -- won their matches by identical 6-3, 6-1 scores. Central Catholic lost both doubles matches, so the third singles match between the Vikings'  Kevin Whalofsky and the Tigers'  Willie Suhrie. Suhrie ultimately triumphed, 3-6, 6-1, 7-7-6 (7-4).
