Wilkinsburg basketball: Only four PIAA berths in single-A; it’s the weight room post-Leopards

Written by Cara De Carlo on .

Before Lincoln Park (19-6, 10-0) lost to Clairton in the WPIAL Class A semifinals, the Leopards had to face Wilkinsburg (13-10, 8-2). Although Lincoln park won 99-58 and went on, Wilkinsburg still had no chance for  PIAA berth. There are only four allotted to the WPIAL in Class A.

“Our boys did pretty well the first quarter,” recalled Tigers’ head coach Reuben Coleman. The quarter ended with Lincoln up 20-17 over Wilkinsburg.

“In the second half of the third quarter, [Lincoln Park’s] size and three-point shots took over.” The Leopards outscored the Tigers 34-19 in the third. Coleman noted that Lincoln Park players had heights near 6’8”, 6’7”, 6’5”, 6’4”, and 6’2.”

“[Those heights] became significant,” Coleman said. “We started turning the ball over.”

The Tigers’ Isaiah Pete and Eric Dean each scored 16 points. Dean is a senior, but Pete is a sophomore and will likely return for Wilkinsburg. The 2013 off-season looks to be a productive one for Wilkinsburg.

“This summer – we’ll focus on the weight room and fundamentals,” said Coleman. “Ball handling, shooting … we’ll be heading back to basics.”

Wilkinsburg boys’ basketball team wanted the hardest possible schedule

Written by Cara De Carlo on .

“When you play with good teams you tend to play better,” said Wilkinsburg head coach Reuben Coleman. “We had some losses but they were losses we needed to have. They showed us where we needed to work as we entered section play.”

The Tigers are in an interesting year; they lost all of the team’s 2011-12 starters in 2012’s graduation. Furthermore, Wilkinsburg was reclassified as being a PIAA Single-A sized school. But even with all new starters and an all-new section Wilkinsburg is excelling. The Tigers had a week of big games last week, with St. Joseph on Tuesday and Imani Christian on Friday (January 18). Game results as well as current records can be found on the WPIAL 2012-13 boys’ basketball page at Post-Gazette NOW.

Against St. Joseph on Tuesday, Wilkinsburg had four players score in the double digits. Isaiah Pete had 21 points, Eric Dean added 13, Eddie Risher had 12, and D’Shawn Adair shot for 10.
