Westinghouse’s Bailey on ‘Fab 5 list’

Written by Cara De Carlo on .

The Post-Gazette’s Fab 5 basketball lists were in the paper today for each zone. Westinghouse’s Robert Bailey was on the East zone list – here’s what his entry said:

"Robert Bailey

Westinghouse

Guard, 6-1, Sr.

Bailey led all players in the City League in scoring with 19.9 points per game in the regular season. ... Most impressively of all, Bailey put up those big numbers while leading the Bulldogs to their first City League title since 1998. They finished 15-9. ... In his team's victory against Brashear in the City League semifinals, Bailey scored a season-high 30 points. It was one of four times this season that he scored 25 points or more in a game..."

'House earns respect and new basketball shoes

Written by Mike White on .

Mike White's Xtra Points for Friday, Mar. 1:

"2013 0301 Whouse WhiteThe Westinghouse boys basketball players won the City League championship last Saturday decked in their blue Nike shoes.

To second-year coach Tariq Francis, those shoes are an example of the respect the program has earned as much as the championship trophy.

Francis is in his second year as Westinghouse's coach, and he has made a quick impact, guiding the Bulldogs to their first City League title since 1998. The title

shouldn't be taken lightly because Westinghouse is a City League school that, besides girls basketball, has had very little success in sports over the past decade or

so."

Westinghouse basketball girls rise to the occasion

Written by Joe Koch on .

Joe Koch's feature on the Westinghouse girls' basketball team:

2013 0228 Whouse JacksonWhen coach Phyllis Jones packed up the gear after her Westinghouse High School Bulldogs fell to Chartiers Valley, 64-31, in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA girls basketball playoffs a year ago, she had just three seniors on her 11-player squad that had just completed a 19-6 season, including a 12-2 regular season and a runner-up finish in the City League playoffs.

Players scheduled to return included starters Kayla Key and Melaija Henderson, both guards who had just completed their sophomore seasons as Bulldogs.

Whatever plans Jones had formed about her team had to be altered when Key transferred to WPIAL Class A power Vincentian Academy and Henderson enrolled at Propel Andrew Street School in Munhall."

Surprising Westinghouse reaches City basketball title game

Written by Malik Vincent on .

Malik Vincent's feature on the Westinghouse basketball team:

2013 0221 House Brown"The blue and gold of Westinghouse High School will be on display again Saturday in a City League basketball championship game.

That's really not all that unusual. The Bulldogs girls team has been a City powerhouse for decades.

But this time, it will be the boys team that hasn't made the big game in 17 years playing for a title.

"It's amazing some of the things that this team has gotten accomplished," Westinghouse coach Tariq Francis said. "These young men have stuck together and are on the verge of achieving something very special. I'm just happy to be a part of it.""
