Memorable season ends for West Mifflin football team

Written by Brad Everett on .

West Mifflin found out last Friday that all good things must come to an end.

On a cold, windy night at Heinz Field, West Mifflin fell to West Allegheny, 34-8, in the WPIAL Class AAA championship game.

The loss was just the second of the season for West Mifflin, which finished 11-2. The Titans were aiming to win their first WPIAL title since West Mifflin North won it all in 1963.
West Mifflin’s high-powered running game never got on track against West Allegheny’s stingy defense. The Titans were held to a season-low in points and didn’t get on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter. West Allegheny ran for 358 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns.

While West Mifflin’s season ended on a low note, a countless number of high notes preceded it.

The Titans, who advanced to the WPIAL championship for the first time since 2004, began the season 8-0 before losing to archrival Thomas Jefferson in the regular-season finale. Despite having just that one loss, the Titans were seeded No. 7 in the playoffs. The low seeding did not hurt them, however, as they went on to defeat No. 10 Knoch (28-14), No. 2 Mars (28-13) and No. 3 Central Valley (36-35) on their way to the final.

Junior running back Jimmy Wheeler was one of the WPIAL’s breakout performers, as he rushed for 2,226 yards and 29 touchdowns. Senior quarterback Derrick Fulmore teamed with Wheeler to give the Titans a lethal one-two running punch. Fulmore rushed for 942 yards and 17 touchdowns, while adding 799 and seven touchdowns through the air.
