West Mifflin's Martin a hit on the football field
Marcus Martin isn’t the first name people think of when the West Mifflin football team comes up in conversation – running back Jimmy Wheeler is usually that guy – but Martin continues to be one of the best players for a Titans team that is 9-1 and plays Mars (9-1) in a WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinal game Friday at Fox Chapel.
A senior tight end/defensive end, Martin leads the Titans in receiving (12 catches, 370 yards, four touchdowns) and very well might be the team’s top defensive player.
Martin was excellent again in West Mifflin’s 28-14 first-round win against Knoch, particularly defensively. Knoch running back Ben Tackett rushed for 86 yards in the first half, but the Titans defense, led by Martin, held Tackett to 3 yards on four carries in the second half.
“I thought [Martin] did a great job,” Knoch coach Mike King said. “They did a good job scheming and taking away our sweep.”
