Nick Tolomeo's feature on the West Mifflin softball team:

"2013 0509 WMifflin FloireFive years ago when coach Casey Phillips arrived at West Mifflin Area, there was no offseason conditioning program for the softball team ... there were no expectations either.

Oh and by the way, there had not been a playoff appearance since the Clinton Administration.

Now in his fifth season at the helm of the Titans, there is an offseason conditioning program, there are expectations and now finally, there is a playoff berth, the first one since 1998."

West Mifflin fought Gateway with sprints, but Titans lost

Written by Cara De Carlo on .

The West Mifflin boys’ track team lost 87-63 in last Wednesday’s team semifinals to Gateway. And anyone who knows anything about track and field knows that this is a very close score.

“From the West Mifflin perspective, a lot of our kids did very, very well,” said West Mifflin head track coach Mike Mazzarese. “I knew we were going to have to have a great performance from Gateway because Gateway was so strong. We gave it our best shot.”

West Mifflin sprinters Jimmy Wheeler and Kevin Garbark heavy-hit for the Titans last Wednesday. Mazzarese noted other good performaces by his team:

“The boys four-by-one relay team is doing well, and also Kenny Hughes in the intermediate hurdles. Our triple jumpers, our four-by-eight, and our four-by-four relay teams – we’re looking forward to getting to WPIALs with those two groups also.”

Some familiar names give West Mifflin that winning look

Written by Malik Vincent on .

Malik Vincent's feature on the West Mifflin track team:

"It goes without saying that some members of the West Mifflin Area High School boys track and field team are busy on a year-round basis.

Take senior Derrick Fullmore, for example.

In the fall, he lines up under center for the Titans as their starting quarterback. Not the easiest of designations on the gridiron.

When the cold of winter hits, he's a high-leaping guard on the boys basketball team."
