West Allegheny football team's offense explodes at right time
During the 12 games that led to Heinz Field, the West Allegheny offense had averaged just 25.5 points per game and only twice scored more than five touchdowns.
It was somewhat of a surprise, then, that the Indians had a 34-0 lead after three quarters, en route to a 34-8 win over West Mifflin in the Class AAA title game and the Indians’ sixth WPIAL championship.
West Allegheny did exactly what West Mifflin had done against Central Valley the week before in a 36-35 victory in the semifinals – control the ball and limit opportunities. West Allegheny had the ball for 57 snaps, 51 of them running plays that netted 386 yards.
West Mifflin’s James Wheeler entered the game with over 2,000 yards rushing but finished with just 82.
Three West Allegheny players had more – Nick Halbedl had 168, Chayse Dillon had 121, and Armand Dellovade had 88. Dellovade also caught a 10-yard scoring pass from Andrew Koester.
