West Allegheny football team's defense still hot

Written by Sports Town on .

In the first five weeks of the season, West Allegheny allowed an average of just over 17 points per game.

In the six weeks since, though, it has allowed a total of 19 points. Fourteen of those points came on late touchdowns by Steel Valley and Ringgold after the mercy rule was in place.

“You get those years when the kids buy in,” said West Allegheny coach Bob Palko. “Then when you have success, it builds. It’s really been a great team effort this year and it’s been awesome. You just love going to practice.”

The defense will be tested this week against undefeated Thomas Jefferson, which has averaged 43 points per game. One of the keys to West Allegheny’s defensive prowess has also been its ability to control the clock with its grueling ground game.

The Indians have run the ball 77 times more than their opponents but outgained them by 1,345 yards – 2,492 to 1,147 – allowing them to control the clock. That running game has also been a total team effort as four different players have scored six or more touchdowns – Chayse Dillon, Tory Delmonico, Nick Halbedl, and Armande Dellovade.
