West Allegheny football's defensive roll continues into rematch

Written by Sports Town on .

West Allegheny finally gave up a touchdown to Ringgold in the fourth quarter in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs. The score didn’t have any effect on the outcome as the Indians won 48-7, but it did mark the first time in four weeks an opponent crossed the goal line.

That defense will be tested again this week as Montour and West Allegheny meet at Chartiers Valley, just three weeks after West Allegheny prevailed 5-3 at Montour in a regular-season game. In those last four weeks, West Allegheny has allowed just 10 points total while the Indians have scored 48 in each of the past two games.

The recent defensive success is in marked contrast to the start of the season when the Indians allowed an average of over 17 points per game and coincides with the improved success of the Indians’ ground game. West Allegheny is averaging 225 yards per game and 6.3 yards per carry, allowing the Indians to keep the ball away from its opponents.

That tactic will be tested this week.
