West Allegheny baseball team back on track
When West Allegheny was winning its WPIAL championship in 1994 and advancing to the PIAA Championship game in Williamsport, the Indians’ leadoff hitter and center fielder was Bryan Cornell.
Cornell still wears that uniform, but now as head coach, and no one is more pleased that West Allegheny has itself in position to make another playoff run. Entering Wednesday’s game with Blackhawk, West Allegheny had won five straight (scoring nine runs or more in each game) and its 2-0 record in Section 1-AAA was tied for first place with Beaver and Blackhawk.
“I wouldn’t say we expected to be 5-1 at this point,” Cornell said. “But I knew we had the talent and it was a matter of getting it all going at the right time. We’re playing the way I knew we could and every game is big in this section.
“It’s tough to stay at the top level for a long time but we have good young kids coming up and I think we’re getting back to that.”
