West Allegheny hockey team savors first Penguins Cup
When Matt Grebosky scored in overtime to win West Allegheny the PIHL Class AA Penguins Cup with a 4-3 win against Erie Cathedral Prep March 24 at Consol Energy Center, his teammates converged on him in a mob in celebration.
The Indians' coaches -- not wearing skates, of course, lagged far behind. But Grebosky skated away from his teammates and toward head coach Tim Veach, giving him a big bear hug.
"He is devoted himself to this team," Grebosky said. "Every single day we have stuff; it's hard for him, it really is, and he puts so much into this team and into scouting teams, working on us every practice. It's just great."
Great as winning a school's first Penguins Cup could be. West Allegheny had PIHL Class AA's best record during the regular season, too.
Jonathan Levitt was the team's leading scorer with 46 points in 21 games; Jason Kumpfmiller had a 2.65 goals-against average and five shutouts.
