Washington football team had reason to be proud in 2012
The Washington Little Prexies walked onto Heinz Field last Friday with an undefeated record and hopes of bringing the school its first WPIAL football championship since 2001.
The Little Prexies left as runners-up, but that did nothing to take away from the fact that this Washington team will be remembered for quite some time.
Aliquippa won its second WPIAL title in a row by defeating Washington, 34-7, in the Class AA championship game.
Just four years after going 1-8, the Little Prexies won the Interstate Conference title and made a spirited run to the championship game, all while adding to the school’s rich tradition of football success and earning the undivided attention of a faithful fan base.
“It's been a great thing for us,” Washington coach Mike Bosnic said after the Aliquippa loss. “The support from the community has been overwhelming. To see the joy and the pride that these guys have once again been able to bring back out in our community, it's been a great experience.”
Junior running back Shai McKenzie had one of the best seasons of any player in the WPIAL, finishing with 2,689 yards rushing and 42 touchdowns. Senior running back Daron Whitaker ran for 484 yards and seven touchdowns. Senior quarterback Josh Wise threw for 598 yards and five touchdowns, while adding 10 touchdowns on the ground.
“It was a great ride,” said Wise. “We had a lot of great players around us, great coaching, and having the community behind us was great. Unfortunately we couldn't come through for them.”
