Vincentian Academy girls' basketball gets out of gate with two wins
Following a pair of victories in the Serra Catholic High Tip-Off Tournament, Vincentian Academy opens its home season with a challenging game against Hampton at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Ranked No. 1 in the Post-Gazette's Class A girls basketball rankings, the Royals defeated defending City League champion Allderdice (79-50) and No. 4 Serra Catholic (67-59) at the Eagles' Tip-Off Tournament last weekend.
In addition to Hampton, which is 1-1 following a 42-38 victory over Seneca Valley and a 33-24 loss to an improved Fox Chapel team, Vincentian has several other tough challenges awaiting them outside of the 12 Section 2-A games this season.
Three days before Christmas, the Royals visit Pine-Richland of Section 3-AAAA. The Rams finished in a tie for second place a year ago with North Allegheny. Also on the schedule are games with Class 2-AAA member New Castle and Gateway, a Class 2-AAAA member which closes out the Royals season.
The Royals will play in three-day Penn State-Beaver Tournament that begins on Dec. 27 and ends on Dec. 29. Their first-round game is against Shenango, which competes in Section 2-AA of the WPIAL and has a 2-0 record following victories over District 10 member Wilmington (46-39) and Northgate (49-34).
And, the school's administration has taken note of the popularity of the game with North Catholic. According to the school's web site, the game with North Catholic that is scheduled for Feb. 7, will take place at Marshall Middle School. Last year's game that was hosted by Vincentian took place at LaRoche College. The two teams split two regular-season meetings, and also split two postseason games. The Royals won the WPIAL Class A championship, while the Trojanettes advanced to the PIAA Class A championship game with a victory over the Royals.
