Section-title season ends for Vincentian Academy baseball team in quarterfinals
A section championship, a seven-game winning streak, nine games in which they scored at least nine runs, three shutouts.
The Vincentian Academy Royals baseball team has plenty to be proud about in regards to this season -- so much so that not even a 10-0 "mercy-rule" loss to Bentworth in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals this past Wednesday can sully it.
Vincentian completed its season 13-6, including a first-place 12-2 in Section 4-A play. The Royals had won seven in a row until the loss in the semifinals.
Greg MacQueen and Ryan Thompson were Vincentian's top two pitchers. MacQueen, a sophomore, had a 1.80 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings. Thompson, a senior, had 52 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings.
Phil Madonna (.448), Chris Koryak (.444) and Payton Carlucci (.400) were the team's leading hitters, and Evan Gourley had three of Vincentian's five home runs this season. Gourley had 22 RBIs and Thompson 21. Ian Taylor's 18 runs were a team-high.
