Madonna big reason Vincentian Academy baseball team on verge of section title
It'd be easy to make a pun connecting Vincentian's Phil Madonna to the iconic female singer who shares his surname, but the sophomore catcher is doing enough that he can, er, Take a Bow of his own.
One of the top catchers in the WPIAL and only a sophomore, Madonna bats in the No. 3 spot in the order for a Royals team that needed only one victory in its final two games Monday and today to assure itself of the outright Section 4-A title.
"He is definitely our leader on the field defensively," Vincentian coach Eddie Dubis said. "He's a very experienced catcher who has caught at different levels and played different levels of catching. That experience helps him take control of the defense out there. (Offensively), he had a slow start to the year, but he's put some multiple-hit games together and is really helping us offensively right now."
Madonna was named to the all-section team last season as a freshman and likely is headed to similar honors this season.
After an 0-3 start to the season, Vincentian won 10 of 12 heading into Monday's game against North Catholic.
